Mythology is the study of myths or a body of myths.Kirk, p. 8; "myth", Encyclopædia Britannica For example, comparative mythology is the study of connections between myths from different cultures,Littleton, p. 32 whereas Greek mythology is the body of myths from ancient Greece. The term "myth" is often used colloquially to refer to a false story;Armstrong, p. 7Eliade, Myth and Reality, p. 1 however, the academic use of the term generally does not refer to truth or falsity.Dundes, Introduction, p. 1 In the study of folklore, a myth is a sacred narrative explaining how the world and humankind came to be in their present form.Dundes, "Binary", p. 45Dundes, "Madness", p. 147 Many scholars in other fields use the term "myth" in somewhat different ways.Doty, p. 11-12Segal, p. 5 In a very broad sense, the word can refer to any traditional story.Kirk, "Defining", p. 57; Kirk, Myth, p. 74; Simpson, p. 3 Read full entry

Mythology?
Many people say that
Christianity started from
mythological stories. I
propose this to you. Is it
possible that these
mythological stories could
have been foretelling the
future?
I do not have a strong
mythology background. It would
be great if you could suggest
any books to read or websites
so I can learn more about
mythology and its relationship
with Christianity. Thank you.
Thank you Haley. I will look
into your suggestions.

Check out "The Power of Myth" by Joseph Campbell. You may also be able to find thevideo of Bill Moyer's interview of Jospeh Campbell that aired on PBS several years ago. Also C.S. Lewis "Mere Christianity" is a good choice for you. Lewis studied mythology and he speaks to the very question you have raised. |

First you should decide what level you want to teach, high school or college. For high school you would need to go to college and get your bachelor's degree and teacher certification. It would probably take about 5 years. For college you will need a Masters degree or a PhD. Its up to you. Good luck. |

What character in Greek I'm making up a myth for a
school project on Greek
Mythology. I am saying that
tornadoes are created from all
the birds of the sky and fish
of the sea and animals of the
earth flying/swimming/running
in a circle, in the same
direction at the same time,
same speed. Anyways, I need to
include some characters in my
myth that relate to the
natural occurrence. Any help
or ideas would be great,
thanx!

Poseidon and his brother Zeus are both gods of weather, Zeus controls the skies, and his brother controls the seas. These two forces as most scientists will say, cause the most of the worlds weather, and especially the storms, such as tornadoes and hurricanes. A little know fact about Poseidon is that he also controls the earthquakes that rattle the world. |
