Monoplegia?
I asked this question about a
week ago:
I have to do a science project
about a very specific problem
in a system. I have two
requests:
1. Could you please tell me
everything you know about
this?
-from causes, treatments,
symptoms, anything
2. Would you consider this
problem in the musculature
system, brain/nervous system,
or another system?
I'm opened to links also.
Thanks so much in advance!
a user, greydoc6 answered it
and gave me some wonderful
information, and now I have
some more questions to ask
about it. He does not allow
users to contact him, which i
respect, so I'm asking y'all.
hold on, I'm going to add the
rest in details:
so this was his answer:
Monoplegia is paralysis of a
single limb. It is usually due
to damage to one or several
spinal nerve dorsal ganglia,
or to a local region of the
cord itself, or to a
peripheral nerve or nerve
plexus.
I have seen monoplegia result
from polio, from a stroke
where the patient hemorrhaged
into the area of the brain
supplied by the right middle
cerebral artery (This actually
resulted in monoparesis, not
monoplegia), and from a birth
injury (Erb-Duchenne paralysis
due to brachial plexus injury
in a breech birth). I have
also seen monoplegia as a
result of a hysterical or
conversion reaction, and from
reflex sympathetic dystrophy.
Then there is traumatic
monoplegia resulting from
damage to a peripheral nerve
as a result of accident, knife
wound, gunshot or other
injury. The problem is mainly
in the brain and nervous
system, including psychiatric
causes.
So my questions:
I was born with monoplegia,
but I don't know why, is this
a common case, or do you think
if I asked, the doctors could
tell me why I have it. They've
never mentioned anything, so I
assumed they didn't know.
And he mentioned monoparesis.
I was diagnosed with
monoplegia, however, my limb
is not paralyzed. It is just
weak. Does this mean I really
have monoparesis, or is it
possible that my leg was at
once paralzyed, but I have
strengthened it?
Sorry, I'd like to update
something:
I just found out that the
doctors say that I got
monoplegia in my development
before I was born, however
that's all they know. I wasn't
diagnosed with it until I
started walking because that
is when they noticed it. Is it
possible that this is the only
information they will ever
know. Do you know of any cases
of monoplegia that developed
in a babies development, if
so, what were the causes?
thanks for reading all this!
Thank you so much! Although
this is a project, it has
leaded me to so many more
questions about my own case. I
didn't have an MRI- doctors
said it would only show where
the monoplegia came from, and
as a little girl, my parents
didn't want to put me through
the risks of anesthesia.

In determining the cause of monoplegia, one has to ascertain if the nerve damage is central (in the brain), or peripheral (in the nerves coming from the brain). Thus it is in the nervous system. Conceivably there could have been damage to muscles of the extremity, say from an amniotic band, or an abnormal position of the fetus in the uterus. But that is a muscular problem called atrophy, not monoplegia. Have you had an MRI? My guess is that during gestation, most likely in the second trimester, you had a hemorrhage of one of the middle cerebral arteries. It is more common in twins, and more common on the right side of the brain resulting in weakness of the left arm. |

Monoplegia Treatments?
Could you please tell me any
known treatments for
Monoplegia or Monoparesis?
I'm doing a project about it
and can't seem to find any
information on this. Links
would also be greatly
appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
