Can strip club shows be That's what I heard a guy say
on a radio interview the other
day. In his opinion, what
women performers do at strip
clubs is comparable to what
African-American and white
performers in blackface used
to do in minstrel shows in the
early part of the 20th
century. Obviously, he was
talking about banning strip
clubs, not bringing back
minstrel shows.

Women are women at a strip show. They are not putting down any other group. They may be hyping the stereotypes and fantasies of the audience about women, but they are women being women. There is no direct comparison between strip shows and minstrel shows, but it is interesting to make the analysis because women and blacks both faced (and face) stereotyping and discrimination. Men dressing as women in a drag show would be a closer comparison. But drag shows aren't meant to be insulting and humiliating to women. Minstrel shows were--and are--insulting to black Americans (known as "slaves" at the time the minstrel shows got going). |

I have a crappy reality TV I'm asking it here because P&S
is full of wit and style.
Shows like "flavor of love"
and "charm school?" are they
just modern day minstril
shows? Look at the
entertainment angle here.
Predominently minoity women
proudley displaying
negetive stereo-types. Is this
really any different from
"Sleep n' eat messes up"?
Maybe we're not doing chicken
and watermelon jokes anymore,
but this stuff is pretty bad.
Are these reality characters
"setting back" their owns
people hundreds of years?
And btw, if you dont know what
a "minstrel show" is, either
dont answer or you can look
them up on wiki. Im not
explaining what one is.
