History
A core doctrine in Christian eschatology is the expectation of the Second Coming and the establishment of the kingdom of God on earth. According to prophecies in the Book of Daniel and the Revelation of St John, this kingdom of God on earth will last a thousand years (a millennium). Kark, Ruth "Millenarism and agricultural settlement in the Holy Land in the nineteeth century," in Journal of Historical Geography, 9, 1 (1983), pp. 47-62 Millenarian ideas permeated early Christian thought. Also known as Revelationists. From the 5th century on, opposition to this ideology mounted, and only small groups outside the official churches embraced it. In the 16th century, millenarian beliefs re-emerged in certain branches of Protestantism, and millenarianism became more entrenched after the French Revolution. In England, these ideas were spread by the evangelical movement in the late 18th and early 19th century. Dozens of books promoting millenarianism were published in the first three decades of the 19th century, and millenarian societies were formed. Leading thinkers of the time were James Bicheno (described by one writer as "a radical philo-Semite")Wilson K A new imperial history: culture, identity, and modernity in Britain and the Empire, 1660-1840 Cambridge University Press, 2004. What do you think of Christian Do you believe that the world
will come to an end in the
year 6000, and this is when
Christ's second coming will
take place.
If you don't believe in Christ
what is your theory about the
end of the world, what might
cause it, and how will you
know it's coming closer?
The more detailed thed answers
the better, but really
anything goes with this
question. Thanks!

Oh, I thought you meant Christians who make hats. Wait, that's millinery. Buh! My theory about the end of the world is that, barring some cometic or meteoric cataclysm, it has about 5 billion years before the sun swallows it up. |

Which religions feature Millenarianism is that
obsession with "end times"
things -- you know, Jesus
coming back, the Rapture (or
not, depending on which Xian
you talk to), the final
judgment of everyone -- the
end of the world. Is this a
phenomenon unique to
Christianity, or do others get
into this sort of thing?
I'm particularly interested to
hear from Muslims on this
question, since Islam is the
religion which interests me
the most, other than my own.

The Prophet had given us great details on how the end times will come. First there will be signs: abundant riches will be found on arab lands and people will fight over them, people will lose their morals, wealth and corruption will be rampant, people will drink alcohol, and women will sing in public, women will act more like men. Then a great Muslim warrior will come (the Mahdi) who will unite the faithful Muslims and lead them into battle against the enemies of Islam. He will conquer the armies of the west and bring prosperity and peace to the Middle East. Then the anti-christ will come. He is known as the Dajjal. The Dajjal will claim that he is the new prophet from God and will lead many astray. The Dajjal will have majical powers and cure people's illnesses. Then the Dajjal will do battle against the Muslims and will kill many of them. Then when all looks hopeless and dark, a new savior will appear. Jesus Christ will make his second coming as a Muslim leader! Jesus will command his army of Muslims against a force of 70,000 soldiers of Dajjal. Jesus will slay the evil ones and will pursue the Dajjal to the Tel Aviv airport in Israel where Jesus will strike him down with a lance. Then Jesus will speak to the Christians and Jews and convert them to Islam. Jesus will then reign on earth, but not for 1000 years. His reign will only last 40 years, but he will marry and have children and have a natural life on earth. This does not quite bring the end yet. There is still a great war to be held.. Between Gog and Magog (known as Yajuj and Majuj). They will bring much distruction, but Jesus will pray to God who will send down a disease to make them crumble from within. Some after this Jesus dies and is buried in Medina next to the prophet Mohammed's grave. Now we are ready for the last days. This is where there are massive sinkholes, the sun rises from the west, a cloud give people hot fevers, and other great tribulations. Many will try to convert to Islam, but it will be too late. These late converts will not be accepted. The world will be lost in heresy and hypocrisy. The star begin to die as the universe rolls up, terro will grip the people who remain. Then there is the last judgement and even the dead arise from the graves to be judged. |

It sounds like a school of thought inwhere the adherents believe that as the millenium rolls over, a major shift in political doctrine and/or technology will occur. |
