Mexican War?
How did the Texas Revolution and its annexation into AMerica begin the Mexican War?
Dear, MEXICAN WAR; Conflict (1846-48) between the United States and Mexico. It grew out of three major problems. First was the status of Texas, a Mexican province which had won its independence in 1836 and was recognized as a sovereign nation by most countries except Mexico. On Feb. 27-28, at Texas' own request, Congress passed a resolution to admit it to the Union, and on Mar. 28, Mexico, still claiming to own Texas, broke diplomatic relations with the U.S. government. Second, Mexico owed about $3,000,000 in claims for injures to American citizens, false imprisonment, and seizure of property. Although acknowledging the legitimacy of the claims and pledging by treaty to pay. Mexico repeatedly failed to make the compensation agreed upon. Third, the United States was eager to acquire the northern part of Mexico, particularly California, and asked Mexico to pay its debt by ceding land. Between Aug., 1845, and Mar., 1846, the United States tried to renew diplomatic relations with the Mexican government through a special minister, John Slidell, who was instructed to offer Mexico up to $25,000,000 and to pay the claims in return for the cession of the region between Texas and the Pacific coast. Slidell also asked Mexico to accept the Rio Grande as the southern boundary of Texas. His mission failed. Meanwhile the United States ordered Gen. Zachary Taylor to occupy southern Texas "on or near the Rio Grande." In Aug., 1845, he camped along the Nueces River near Corpus Christi, and in Mar., 1846, moved his little army to the north bank of the Rio Grande opposite Matamoras. On Apr., 25 Gen. Mariano Arista, the commander of a Mexican detachment, crossed the Rio Grande and attacked Taylor. President James K. Polk then sent a war message to Congress with the announcement that "American blood has been shed upon American soil". Congress declared war on the May 13, five days after Taylor had defeated the Mexican troops in the battle of Palo Alto. Peace; Peace negotiation were complicated because Santa Anna had fled and it was difficult to find any Mexican authority with which to conclude a peace treaty. Polk sent a special agent Nicholas Philip Trist, to negotiate a peace treaty. Before Trist negotiated this treaty, however, Polk had begun to think in terms of annexing the whole of Mexico. The military victories of the last few months of the war had been so striking and the sacrifices of the army so great that he believerd Mexico ought to pay a more severe penalty than merely the terms offered before the war. Trist was ordered to return to Washington, but he ignored the President and negotiated the Treaty of Gaudelupe Hidalgo (Feb. 2, 1848). Although furious with Trist for his disobedience. Folk decided not to repudiate the treaty, because of the impending selection. Congress found the treaty a good compromise on the ticklish slavery problem and decided not to postpone a final settlement. On Mar. 10, 1848, the Senate approved the treaty by vote of 38 to 14, thus formally ending the Mexican War. (PHILIP S. KLEIN, Pennsylvania State University)
How did Mexican war galvanizeanti slavery and abolitionmovements?
How did the Mexican war and other attempts to expand slavery galvanize the anti-slavery and abolition movements?
Well, think about it. After the Mexican war, there was the issue of admitting Texas as either a slave state or a free state. At that time, there'd been a deadlock between the number of representatives for free and for slave states, so Texas would break that deadlock. That was why it took so long for Texas to finally be admitted, hence its nickname "the lone star."
What is the relationshipbetween Gold rush and Mexicanwar?
And how did the California became one of the state of the America? Is it because the Americans immigrated to California to find gold? or because they won the Mexican war?
None. Gold was discovered in 1848 2 years after the war started and just a few days before it was over.
