Sometimes Manifest Destiny was interpreted so broadly as to include the eventual absorption of all North America: Canada, Mexico, Cuba and Central America. Advocates of Manifest Destiny believed that expansion was not only ethical but that it was readily apparent ("manifest") and inexorable ("destiny"). Although initially used as a catch phrase to inspire the United States' expansion across the North American continent, the 19th century phrase eventually became a standard historical term. Manifest Destiny was the belief that the United States was destined to expand from the Atlantic seaboard to the Pacific Ocean; it has also been used to advocate for or justify other territorial acquisitions some actually had a sincere intent, wanting to spread American ideals such as democracy, but others used it as justification for expansion. |

Well, Manifest Destiny was the belief that God had ordained Americans to spread the "blessings of liberty" among the entire continent of North America. This would in turn necessitate acquiring new land, and adding new territories and states to the United States. However, this could not be done without causing the conflict about the balance of Slave and Free states in the Senate. If a state was admitted as free, the North would have more people in the Senate than the South, and the South wouldn't stand for this. If a state was admitted as a slave state, then the South would have more people in the Senate than the North did, and in turn the North wouldn't stand for that. Eventually, the North and South "compromised" and decided that the status of the state should be determined by the people who live there (popular sovereignty). However, this then would cause both Northerners and Southerners to move to the state in question (such as Kansas) and essentially they'd start shooting at each other. The South obviously didn't like this. In addition to that, they didn't like the Northern Abolitionist attacks. After a few more years, Lincoln got elected, and South Carolina was the first to secede along with a few others, then Lincoln got inaugurated, more states seceded, Lincoln declared the states in rebellion, and started a "war" (the Civil War) in order to preserve the Union. His main goal was to keep the Union together (at least at first) contrary to the belief of many who think that his goal in the Civil War was to free the slaves. |
