When Mario Savio was attacked When Mario Savio was attacked
what role did President Lyndon
Johnson play in the case and
how were his attackers
punished?

President Lyndon Johnson had signed the Civil Rights Act, and he pressed a reluctant Hoover to probe civil rights violations. http://www.mindfully.org/Refor m/2004/Mario-Savio-FBI-COINTEL PRO10oct04.htm During the summer of 1964 he joined the Freedom Summer projects in Mississippi and was involved in helping African Americans register to vote. He also taught at a freedom school for black children in McComb, Mississippi. In July, Savio, another white civil rights activist and a black acquaintance were walking down a road in Jackson and were attacked by two men. They attempted to press charges but the case went nowhere until President Lyndon Johnson, who had only recently passed the Civil Rights Act, urged the FBI look into it as a civil rights violation. Eventually one of the attackers was found, but was only fined $50 and charged with misdemeanor assault. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M ario_Savio |

How did Lyndon Johnson I need some homework help.
Here's the entire question:
In 1964, President Lyndon
Johnson "declared war" on
poverty. How did he implement
this war? Who was affected?
Did life change for those who
took advantage of what this
"war" had to offer?
|

. If that war was ever actually started, it is obvious that he didn't win it! But check out Wikipedia and see if it has any info. on it. . |
