...The Louisiana Purchase (French: Vente de la Louisiane "Sale of Louisiana") was the acquisition by the United States of America of of the French territory Louisiana in 1803. The U.S. paid 60 million francs ($11,250,000) plus cancellation of debts worth 18 million francs ($3,750,000), a total cost of 15 million dollars for the Louisiana territory. The American Pageant by David M. Kennedy, Lizabeth Cohen, and Thomas A. Bailey Table 1.1 Acquisition of the Public Domain 1781-1867http://lsm.crt.state.la.us/cabildo/cab4.htm
The Louisiana Purchase encompassed all or part of 14 current U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. The land purchased contained all of present-day Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, parts of Minnesota that were west of the Mississippi River, most of North Dakota, nearly all of South Dakota, northeastern New Mexico, the portions of Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado east of the Continental Divide, and Louisiana west of the Mississippi River, including the city of New Orleans. (The Oklahoma Panhandle, and southwestern portions of Kansas and Louisiana were still claimed by Spain at the time of the Purchase.) In addition, the Purchase contained small portions of land that would eventually become part of the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. The land included in the purchase, doubled the size of the United States, which comprises around 23% of the territory of the United States today. The population was estimated to be 97,000 as of the 1810 census.[1] Read full entry

3) How was the Lewis and Clark
expedition that followed both
a scientific and a political

1) Jefferson had a goal of a coast to coast world power. The Louisiana Purchase was a cheap way to cut the needed land to achieve that goal in half. He also agreed wholeheartedly with Monroe's idea that European powers in the western hemisphere did not bode well for America. The purchase effectively removed a very powerful France from the Americas. 2)Originally, Jefferson wanted to purchase New Orleans and as much land from there east along the southern seaboard as possible. Napoleon's counter-offer was for more money, but for far more land stretching far north to present day Canada and even further west. He did so to fund his expansionist wars in Europe. 3) Lewis and Clark's scientific achievements were mostly in the area of finding new plant and animal life that didn't exist back east, but they also created a lot of hype for settlement as far west as possible. This was a great political victory for the country because it contributed to Jefferson's goal for a coast to coast nation. |

The Louisiana purchase in 1803 gave the United States land which now encompasses 15 of the central states. The US government paid $23 million total to Spain and France which greatly increased the size of the country without having to fight any wars. |
