...Lissencephaly, which literally means smooth brain, is a rare brain formation disorder caused by defective neuronal migration during the 12th to 24th weeks of gestation, resulting in a lack of development of brain folds (gyri) and grooves (sulci).Dobyns, WB. Developmental aspects of lissencephaly and the lissencephaly syndromes. Birth Defects Orig Artic Ser 1987; 23:225. It is a form of cephalic disorder. Terms such as 'agyria' (no gyri) or 'pachygyria' (broad gyri) are used to describe the appearance of the surface of the brain. Children with lissencephaly are severely neurologically impairedBauman, ML. Neuroembryology--clinical aspects. Semin Perinatol 1987; 11:74. and often die within several months of birth.Jones, KL. Lissencephaly is an abnormality of the brain which causes severe mental retardation and poor motor control similar to cerebral palsy. Most people with the condition have a short life span. Lissencephaly literally means "smooth brain" and it is called this because, unlike a normally developed brain which has lots of folds and ridges, the lissencephalic brain appears smooth. Looking for top geneticists in We have an 8 month old dx.
with Lissencephaly,
Miller-Dieker studies are

chromosomes 46, XY, and FISH
for 22q11.2 deletion were
normal, Lysosomal studies had
some values lower than normal.
MRI taken 3 days after

Lissencephaly is a set of rare brain disorders and you will probably find that very few people have heard of it. Lissencephaly is used as an 'umbrella' term to describe a range of disorders where the whole or parts of the surface of the brain appear smooth. How is it caused? We know that in Lissencephaly the brain develops normally in early pregnancy but then fails to progress normally after the third to fourth month. There are several causes and these can be identified in many children. The different types of Lissencephaly generally have different causes. These fall into four main categories: An inherited genetic condition that may come from either one or both parents; A new genetic mutation (i.e not inherited) that occurs in a gene that is critical for the correct development of the brain; An infection from a virus during pregnancy; An interruption of the blood supply to the foetus during pregnancy. |
