Lewis and Clark questionrelating to the Indians?
Can someone give me more information on how Lewis and Clark related to the Indians? Like what did he negotiate with them for? And what did Lewis tell the Indians the expedition was for? And What the Indians couple expect from the USA. I just need more information on the relationship between Lewis and Clark and the Indians. What did Lewis expect from the Indians? Thanks for your help!! This question is in relation to the entry of their journal on August 17th, 1805.
I doubt they got into much in depth negotiations. They just traded for items they needed and asked for advice how to get upstream. Any more than that and they would have invited attack. It is not like they had any hope of backup so they could only ask of the Indians and not make any sorts of demands. "Lewis tried to give his standard explanation of the trip, and suggest that if the Blackfeet would make peace with their Indian enemies, U.S. traders would come along with guns and other goods for all tribes. The Blackfeet understood Lewis to say that the U.S. planned to arm the Blackfeet's enemies and come help them fight. Not too surprisingly, they wanted to kill these whites so they couldn't return to the Great Father that Lewis spoke of. At least two Blackfeet died in the fight." http://www.lewisandclark.com/f acts/faqs.html#fght
