...Members of all genera except Lepus are usually referred to as rabbits, while members of Lepus (which accounts for almost half the species) are usually called hares. However the distinction between these two common names does not map completely into current taxonomy, since jackrabbit are members of Lepus, and members of the genera Pronolagus and Caprolagus are sometimes called hares. How do you pronounce ty

It would be pronounced: lep-or-i-die. I'm not sure where the accent would fall, as I don't know every Latin word in the dictionary, but based on my knowledge, the stress is either on the first syllable or on the antepenultimate. So it would either be LEP-or-i-die or lep-OR-i-die. It's very unlikely that the stress is on the penultimate or the last syllable. That rarely ever happens in words that are more than three syllables in Latin. In either case, in Latin, the vowel (actually a dipthong) "ae" is *always* prounced like the vowel in "eye", *never* like the vowel in the word "day" or "dee". I've studied Latin for a while now. Trust me. "ae" is ALWAYS the vowel in the "eye". Oh, and make sure you pronounce the single "i" before the last syllable as a short vowel, similar to the one in "bit". |
