What is the Khazar relation to I recently learned that
Ashkenazi Jews may not be
semetic in ancestry and that
they are actually the
reminants of the nomadic
Khazars. What does this theory
entail? I am completely
confused.

I don't understand why so many non-Jews are interested in proving or disproving who is a Jew. What does it matter to you? Just leave it to us. It's not your business to define who we are.. |

The early history of the Khazars is obscure. Most likely the Khazars were a confederation of Turkic-speaking tribes that in the late 6th century established a commercial empire just north of the Black sea. Before this they may have originally been located in the northern Caucasus region and were part of the western Turkic empire in what is now Turkistan. By the beginning of the 7th century the Khazars had become independent of the Turkic empire to the east. They were involved in a series of wars with the Arabs to the south. By the 8th century the Khazars reached the peak of their power. From being nomads they became mostly involved with trade. Their main source of revenue was due to their control of the east-west trade that linked the Far East with Byzantium (Eastern Roman Empire) and the north-south trade route linking the Arab empire with northern Slavic lands. About 740 their ruling class adopted Judaism as their religion. But by the 10th century their empire began a decline due in part to the growing power of the surrounding states, especially Russia. The Russians defeated them in 965. Although they continued to survive, their political and economic was gone. I hope that this has been a help to you. |
