What do you make of the John Glenn didn't seem to
think that the "fireflies"
were from his spacecraft. I
know that his spacecraft was
giving the landing bag
deployed sensor, but I just
wanted to get some added info
on what all of you think.

John Glenn may not have thought that, but he was the first person to see them and he wasn't devoting any time to a detailed investigation of them. He had other things to do. Scott Carpenter, the next man to fly a Mercury spacecraft, WAS given study of the 'fireflies' as a task to perform, and he identified them as ice crystals jolted from the spacecraft during various uses of the manoeuvring system. He was even able to produce a swarm of them by rapping hard on the wall of the cabin. Debris and ice has been frequently observed on later spacecraft too. |
