...According to Holocaust scholar Lucy Dawidowicz, the term "Jewish Question" as introduced in western Europe was a neutral expression for the negative attitude toward the apparent and persistent singularity of the Jews as a people on the background of the rising political nationalisms and new nation-states. Dawidowicz writes that "the histories of Jewish emancipation and of European antisemitism are replete with proffered 'solutions to the Jewish question.'"Lucy Dawidowicz, The War Against the Jews, 1933-1945 (New York, 1975), pp. xxi-xxiii. There is no specific tradition to have a cake at a Bar or Bat mitzvah. however, most people do as the occassion takes the place of a birthday party, complete with cake. However, there is no specific shape or style for the cake - often, with non-observant families where the Bar/Bat mitzvah is more of a social and cultural event rather than a religious one, you find that the Bar/Bat mitzvah has a theme (I have been to enchanted forest, dinosaurs, sports, fairies etc- and yep- a lot of themes are inappropriate given the nature of the occassion...) and the cake is designed to fit into the theme. Rather advertise the making of themed cakes etc than trying to come up with a generic bar/bat mitzvah cake. An important note here: Unless your friend has kosher certification, they will not be used by Orthodox Jews and many Conservative Jews. They will get business from Reform/Reconstructionist/Renew al Jews, but then definitel concentrate on themes etc as those denominations view these occassions as a cultural celebration and do not worry about Jewish law. |

Why was my question concerning I placed a question about why
Jewish holidays in the US and
why they US Senators and
Congressmen get days off on
these days and the question
was removed because "it is
violation of our Community
Guidelines or Terms of
Service." and "Violation
Reason:Not a Question or
Answer." Why are people so
hostile when anyone makes an
issue of Jewish ideology?

Hey there are a lot of people who hate religions, that think there fake. But that is what test our faith, we have to remain faithful to God, who cares if they took off your question. Just write it down again to porve your not ashame, and also to make them more mad. I know what you mean im not a jew but a christian, but we have a lot of similarities. |

Jewish friends, a question Every year our town has a
Christmas parade. One float
has a menorah on it and says
in lights "Happy Hanukkah." I
think it is wonderful that our
small Jewish community
participates, but some people
said it seemed weird to have
that in a Christmas parade.
Is there really anything wrong
with it from a Jewish
perspective? We don't have a
big enough Jewish presence
here to have separate Hanukkah
events for the town.
Thank you.

I think it's lovely :) It's obvious that Chanukah is being represented separately within the Xmas parade, so there is absolutely no problem. And I think THIS is the way forward for all faiths - to share and complement each other! Nice post :) |
