Noun
- A morbid condition, characterized by yellowness of the eyes, skin, and urine, whiteness of the feces, constipation, queasiness, loss of appetite, and general languor and lassitude. It is caused usually by obstruction of the biliary passages and consequent damming up, in the liver, of the bile, which is then absorbed into the blood. Other causes include increased hemolysis and any liver disease. The discoloration is caused by accumulation of bilirubin in the body; bilirubin is normally excreted in bile to give feces their normal yellow-brown coloration.
...Jaundice, also known as icterus (attributive adjective: icteric), is a yellowish discoloration of the skin, the conjunctival membranes over the sclerae (whites of the eyes), and other mucous membranes caused by hyperbilirubinemia (increased levels of bilirubin in the blood). This hyperbilirubinemia subsequently causes increased levels of bilirubin in the extracellular fluids. Typically, the concentration of bilirubin in the plasma must exceed 1.5 mg/dL, Arthur, and John Hall, John. Textbook of Medical Physiology, Saunders, September 2005, ISBN 978-0721602400, three times the usual value of approximately 0.5 mg/dL, for the coloration to be easily visible. Jaundice comes from the French word jaune, meaning yellow. Read full entry

I went through it with my son when he was 10 days old... we ended up in the hospital on easter and had to spend the night. I was told it was 1 of 2 things... breast fed/milk jaundice or a liver problem that would land us in the the situation to see a specialist. It ended up being the 1st one thank god. The dr told me the levels could get fairly high and still be safe. He had to go under the lights and be supplemented to find out wich one it was... it was a pain through b/c I had to pump at every feeding while he was supplemented so my milk wouldn't dry up. It has nothing to do with hormones. The best way I can explain it is... When the baby eats breast milk the way it's processed... red blood cells are broke down into bilirubin (the yellow color... jaundice) and it gets out of the system by attaching too breast milk and then gets pooped out. The baby looks yellow because all the bilirubin isn't getting out of the babys system. Formula has a higher/bigger amount of the proteins that the bilirubin attaches to. That's why the yellow goes away faster. All you can do is feed more to flush it out quicker (the more poop the quicker it goes LOL)... put the baby in indirect sunlight... the sun helps break down the bilirubin. And as a LAST resort supplement... but it really isn't necessary. DON"T worry or get concerned unless the baby starts sleeping more than usual... is unresponsive/hard to wake... hard to keep away long enough to eat. Then that's a sign that the bilirubin levels have gotten too high... then it's a trip to the hospital to go under the lights. Hope this helps. |

Being vaccumed out has nothing to do with jaundice. my daughter was vacumed and dint have it but my son was natural and did. The longer its left untreated the more it affects the brain. my son had to go back to hospital after 2 days to go in an incubator under a uv sort of light. he was under it for 2 days and his levels went down but i had to go back to hospital to have his blood checked a few more times to make sure it hadnt gone back up. it didnt and he was jaundice free in about 3 weeks. |

Is the sun good for a cat with My cat is very jaundice. She
is having a very serious liver
problem that is being treated
by the vet. As a result of her
liver problem, she is
extremely jaundice. I know
that babies who have jaundice
are often told to be put
outside to get the suns rays.
Will the same help with cats?
Or is there to much hair for
the sun to help?

The cat's hair would not prevent the ultra-violet rays from being absorbed. As the other poster said you should check with your vet to see if it is a good idea for the cat to have that exposure. |
