Was it right for the record This single Mom in Duluth
Minnesota now owes the record
companies $222,000 for sharing
music online. Do you agree
with this verdict? Is it just?
Does it effect how you feel
about the record companies?

Tresec is a self-righteous b@stard! I hate the music industry! I hate the IRAA. You wouldn't get fined that much if you stole somebody's car. And everyone has done this in one shape or another. I personally don't illegally download (anymore) but I still know lots and lots that do and I would feel terrible if they were to have to live on the streets because the recording association wants to prove a point. Why don't they focus on Kazaa and Limewire for making a haven for downloaders instead of attacking the individuals who obviously don't have the means to pay the fines if they can't even pay for music. Especially a single mom. She had to deny doing it because she had no other choice. It's not stealing in the same sense as getting mugged on the street or getting your bike taken. I don't care what people say. The main people involved in this are the young people who are also the ones supporting the industry in many other ways. For example, They are also the most targeted audience for media sponsors becuase of their buying habits, (Ipods, cell phones, computers) Do you think an 18 year old is going to buy an IPOD and then spend $30,000 to fill it with songs? Of course not. |

how the lady got caught? But

Does anyone know the details
about this?
such as, which program did she
use?, and how did they find
her downloading songs? etc...
Let me know. Thanks.

She used Kazaa and downloaded several files that were being watched. They knew these files were under copyright, and as soon as she finished downloading them they had evidence of the crime. There's an article explaining how this happens in more detail at http://chronicle.com/free/2008 /05/2821n.htm - it's very simple. |

Kaaza did not upload the music, it was uploaded onto the internet from someones computer, somewhere in the world, and the file gets put into Kazaa's database. From there other people can find the same file and download it for free, basically sharing with the person that uploaded it, hence "file share". It is illegal to do this due to copyright laws, and that's what Ms. Thomas-Russet was charged for. All that Kazaa is, is a file-sharing database. You can download free songs on the internet if you find websites that offer them, assuming that the website is paying for the download to occur, or other stipulations are in place to make the transaction legal, like "buy this product get a free download of your choice". |
