What are some creative ways toteach interjections to 5thgraders?
I only want to use interjections and no other parts of speech. Are there any online games or mad libs type activities? Thanks!
1) Find an online comic strip with interesting action and good-sized word bubbles. Using a graphics editing program (even Paint will work), erase (or paint over the actual text with white). Print copies (please leave the copyright mark intact!!!) of the now blank comics. Have your students choose from a premade list of interjections to complete the action. Comics with superheroes and lots of action work best. Comics with people standing around chatting would be much more difficult. 2) Have them work in pairs to draw simple facial expressions (glorified smilies). One student will dramatically say the interjection, the other student will try to draw the face. You will need to point out certain facial features, like eyebrows and the size of the mouth. 3) Give them funny scenarios to act out using only interjections as the dialogue. Let them practice away from other groups and then perform for the class. Let the class try to figure out what's going on. "Hmmm!" [meaning: That's interesting!] "Hmm?" [meaning: What is?] "Gasp!" [meaning: Didn't you see THAT?!] "Uhm... Oh!" [meaning: Let me look for a moment.. Oh, yes!] 4) Play "interjection bingo". Create a blank table template using Word or some other source (pencil and paper is fine too). Write a list of interjections on the board and let the students fill in their own bingo sheet with a free space. Then, instead of calling out an interjection, put copies of the word into a bag (like you would with chips) but act out the interjection (without saying the word) and let them try to figure it out. [word card says: Eeeek! - You jump and act surprised]
