History

Surviving pre-Roman place names show that the area has been populated continuously. In the fourth century the Romans established the army station Veldidena (the name survives in today's urban district Wilten) at Oenipons (Innsbruck), to protect the economically important commercial road from Verona-Brenner-Augsburg. Only one train station there. Here are some more details on how to get from the airport to the Trainstation. Innsbruck Kranebitten Airport (IATA: INN, ICAO: LOWI) is the largest airport in Tyrol in Western Austria. It handles regional flights around the Alps, as well as seasonal flights to other destinations. During the winter, activity increases significantly, due to the high number of skiers traveling to the region. It is the main base of Tyrolean Jet Services, Welcome Air and of Austrian Airlines' regional carrier Austrian Arrows. The airport is approximately 2.5 miles from the center of Innsbruck. It is connected to the city and to the Hauptbahnhof (main train station) by city bus F. The journey runs every 15 minutes and takes 18 minutes. |

What's the best way to travel 6 friends want a nice weekend
break in Salzburg to celebrate
one of their special
birthdays, and the Sound of
Music is her favourite film of
all time. We can only fly from
Bristol to Innsbruck and it
looks like a good 2 hour
journey to Salzburg. Is there
a train station under the
airport? Which is the fastest
and cheapest way to get to
Salzburg. Not going for a
while yet, but just sussing it
all out, including finding an
apartment for 6.

The website of the Innsbruck airport does not mention any long-distance buses. Citybus-Line F departs from the Airport every 15 minutes and takes 16 minutes to reach the Central Train Station (Hauptbahnhof). The single ticket is €1.70; a 4-trip ticket is offered for €5.80. It would be best to buy three 4-trip tickets which would cover the round-trip from the Airport to the Central Station and back. The tickets must be stamped on entering the bus, 6 persons = 6 stamps. Direct trains to Salzburg take less than 2 hours and depart every two hours between 07:30am and 09:30pm. The regular single fare is €35.20, however the Austrian Railway company grants a discount of 40% for travel groups of more than 5 people, so you should ask for that group ticket. Is there anywhere is Innsbruck Tomorrow I fly out to Austria
and Innsbruck Kranebitten.
However I have a period of
about 6 where I'll be able to
explore the city- but as I am
going onto Italy later on in
the day, I'll have my bag with
me. Obviously this is just a
hinderence to have to carry a
bag full of a weeks worth of
clothes and it would be sad to
miss the opportunity to
explore Innsbruck.
Any suggestions/ideas?

If you're travelling on by air just check your luggage through to the final destination. You don't have to pick it up then in Innsbruck. Otherwise there is a possibility at the central railway station (lockers). They can also hold larger suitcases as they have been modernized for last year's Football European Championships. Enjoy Innsbruck although the might not be very fine. |
