...At common law, legitimacy is the status of a child who is born to parents who are legally married to one another, or who is born shortly after the parents' marriage ends through divorce. Illegitimacy?
I am using Family Tree Maker,
but what I want to know is how
any of you handle illegitimacy
in your genealogy program.
Seems to me, and I have tried
several programs, that the
moment you list two people as
parents the program decides
that they are married. In
Family Tree Maker I can detach
a spouse but then both parents
will not show up as the
parents of the child.

In family tree maker, you can distinguish relationship as other than marriage. 1) Enter your information on both parents 2) Click on the marriage notes (which is the pencil icon next to the marriage dates.) 3) After you click on the pencil, you should be on the general tab. 4) Next to Relationship, there will be a drop down box. This box distinguishes what kind of relationship this is. You can choose from married, other, partners, friends, single, or private. My mother in law fits the same situation and I chose "single" as the relationship type. In all of the reports, it says that Person A "met" Person B and then it lists their child. The reports never mention the word married. I hope this helps. |

where can I get legal answers The mother put the name of the
biological father on the birth
certificate though she was
still married to another man,
but separated. Does the
biological father have all the
legal rights to this child or
does other measures need to be
taken?

If he is on the birth certificate AND is the undisputed biological father, that should be enough. Issues usually arise if a person who is not the biological father is listed on the birth certificate as the biological father. If the husband is claiming to be the biological father, then get DNA testing and a lawyer. |
