What is a good mixture orrecipe for a humming birdfeeder?
What is a good mixture or recipe for a humming bird feeder? I would like to make my own humming bird mixture but am a little concerned. I have heard that mildew can kill the birds. What is a good mixture for them? Is honey or syrup better than sugar?
You should mix 3 parts water to 1 part sugar. Be sure to keep it refrigerated. Sugar is the best to use. Just make small amounts so that it doesn't go bad. Be sure to clean your feeder each time that you refill it and your hummers will be fine.
Does anybody know what thename of orange and black birdis that drinks out of myhumming bird feeder ?
The bird is yellow orange everywhere except the head and wings. It loves the humming bird feeder. It sings a beautiful sound. Humming birds don't mind it drinking with them !
It sounds like you have a Baltimore oriole. Besides bugs, worms, etc, they also like the necter that you feed your hummers. If you have large trees nearby look up and see if you can find something that resembles a white-colored silk bag hanging from a high branch. That would be its' nest. And it's a good chance that it has a mate. And yes, it sings a beautiful song as well. Consider yourself very lucky to have this lovely summer visitor around as their numbers have dwindled drastically over the past few years.
How can I keep the honey bee'sfrom robbing my humming birdfeeder?
Honey bee's are draining my humming bird feeder at a rate of about 1 cup an hour. I don't want to stop feeding the birds, but I don't want to feed the bee's.
There are several things on the market to stop this, my favorite is a basin style hummingbird feeder. The classic feeder has the nectar above the feeding ports, right? Well, this forces the nectar to the tips of the ports where the bees can reach it. A basin feeder has the nectar below the ports, so the birds dip their beaks in, and the bees can't reach it. Check out this site. You can buy these types of feeders on the net or in a lot of outdoor stores.
