History Help?
I have no clue what this
history question is b/c i cant
find in in my text!! Help!?:
What difference did it make to
the hudsons bay company to
have a fort on the north shore
of the Columbia river rather
than the south?
|
|
![]() |
By 1824, the Hudsons Bay Company decided to establish a new headquarters on the Columbia. Fort Spokane was abandoned because it was not on a navigable water route, and Fort George was moved for two reasons. First, the wet, cloudy weather at the mouth of the Columbia was not conducive to the farming necessary for adequate food supplies. Second, Fort George was on the south bank of the river, and the Companys British owners wanted to be on the north bank, since at the time it was thought that the Columbia River would become the border between British territory and the United States. gatita_63109 |
