The Holy Roman Empire was a league of medieval states in Central Europe during the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period. It constituted what is now German speaking Europe (Gemany, Switzerland, and parts of Austria), as well as parts of Italy and the Low Countries. The Holy Roman Empire, (sometimes known as the First Reich) has it's origins with Charlemagne, the King of the Franks. Roughly three hundred years after the Fall of the Western Roman Empire, Charlemagne expanded the Frankish kingdoms into a Frankish Empire that incorporated much of Western and Central Europe. In an attempted revival of the Roman Empire in the West, he was crowned Imperator Augustus by Pope Leo III on Christmas Day, AD 800. Following the death of Charlemagne in AD 814, the Empire was divided between his sons. The title of emperor remained in his family for years to come. However, royal brothers fought over who had the supremacy in the Frankish state. When the descendents of Charlemagne ceased to produce worthy heirs, the Papacy gladly crowned whichever powerful warlord could best protect Rome and the Papacy from its enemies. Finally, in 962, in a radically different Europe from Charlemagne's, a new Roman Emperor was crowned in Rome by a grateful Pope. This emperor, Otto the Great, brought the title into the hands the kings of Germany for almost a millennium, for it was to become officially known as the Holy Roman Empire, a true imperial successor to Charlemagne, if not Augustus. The Holy Roman Empire lasted from the reign of Otto the Great until Francis II, the last Emperor, who abdicated and dissolved the Empire in 1806 during the Napoleonic Wars. Following the abdication of Francis II, Napoleon reorganized much of the empire into the Confederation of the Rhine, a French satellite. Following Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo, the Napoleonic Confederation of the Rhine was replaced by the German Confederation and the North German Confederation in succession, until the German-speaking territories outside of Austria were united under Prussian leadership in 1871, as the German Empire, the predecessor-state of modern Germany. Hope all this helps, Peace. |

Is the Holy Roman Empire Is the Holy Roman Empire
related to the Original Roman
Empire and the Byzantine?

There is a connection that was missed by previous answers. The Papal states had been under the protection of the Byzantines since the days of Justinian (600's). Around the year 800 however, the Byzantines were relatively weak and thus unable to offer much protection against the Lombard's who were threatening Rome. The Pope realized this and appealed to the Franks to come to his aid who did so and afterwards Charlemagne was awarded with the title of 'Holy Roman Emperor' . From this time onward, the Byzantine empire could no longer claim supremacy in Rome because it was now oficially under the protection of 'The Holy Roman Empire' instead.. |

Which 12 present day countries It was a union of territories
in Central Europe under a Holy
Roman Emperor. The first was
Charlemagne, crowned on
December 25. 800.
There's a rebirth of the Holy
Roman Empire already in
existence today, and when it
will be fully completed is
anyone's guess.
Read the question, which 12
present day countries would
make up the HRE? Most of the
12 present-day countries we
have now, would be the HRE
when it is reborn. The EU has
started the rebirth today. The
list of countries below, only
6 are correct.
