The halo effect refers to a cognitive bias whereby the perception of a particular trait is influenced by the perception of the former traits in a sequence of interpretations. The halo effect is involved in Kelley's implicit personality theory, where the first traits we recognize in other people then influence the interpretation and perception of latter ones (because of our expectations). Attractive people are often judged as having a more desirable personality and more skills than someone of average appearance. Celebrities are used to endorse products that they have no expertise in evaluating. |

What causes Halo effect in Over the last few months I
have experienced severe halo
effect, mainly at night while
driving. Its gotten so bad I
feel like I might crash! I
experience this while wearing
my contacts AND my glasses And
without wearing either. I have
the anti glare on my glasses
but it still happens. My
eyesight is very bad but I
never really had a problem
with the halo except for
recently. I am quite worried
about this and would

This one is about how the way you dress can affect whether people judge you as a competent person, it's short, but you could replicate it by finding pictures of businesspeople (some in normal work clothes, others in "sexier" clothes, and maybe some dressed a bit messily) and asking people to rate them on competence, intelligence, etc. Or instead, of people that are conventionally attractive, others that look foreign (varies on where you live, I suppose) and others that are unattractive. http://www.livescience.com/str angenews/051129_sexy_attire.ht ml And this one's just for fun. It's from Penn and Teller's show, Bullsh*t. (Count how many times that bell rings!!! And listen to the really stupid questions she can ask and people'll stick around just to look at her). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =75vLcfO-rso Again, easy enough to do: Version 1: find two girls (or guys) who look more or less alike, have both of them stop people of the street (or a parking lot or whatever) to talk to people and collect signatures for some (fake, made-up) cause. Have one girl dress conservatively and one dress kinda revealingly. See who gets the most signatures. Version 2: find a girl (or guy) who's considered attractive, and one who's not-so-attractive. Then do the same as above. What fun! |
