Great Lakes?
What is the deepest spot of
any of the great lakes
|

Of the Great Lakes, Superior is the deepest; along much of Minnesota's North Shore the lake is 700 feet deep (213 meters) within 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) of land. The deepest spot, 1,332 feet (406) meters is 40 miles off of Munising, Michigan. Chicago's Sears Tower could sit at this depth with only a few floors sticking above the water. |

In 2005, we drove from Buffalo to Toronto to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The Canadian side of Niagara Falls is very pretty. However, an undiscovered "gem" is Manitoulin Island, Ontario. It's the largest freshwater island in the world. The access is by ferry, IIRC, so you either have to reserve early or wait in line. Check it out. And the Soo Locks are pretty cool. You do have to cross into the US to see them, though. |

What Type of Seasonal I'm probably going to be
moving up north to The Great
Lakes - most likely close to
Lake Michigan. What type of
seasonal attractions are
there? I've heard that for the
most part, you can't swim in
The Lakes; is that true? What
kinds of things can people do
up there?

The obvious attraction to the Great Lakes is the amazing sailing and boating destinations. If you don't spend a lot of time on a boat, there are still plenty of exciting events and attractions surrounding the Great Lakes especially during the summer months. The Lake Michigan coast is one of the world's most beautiful shorelines, encompassing some of the top beaches on the Great Lakes. In addition, there are plenty of opportunities for adventure with sand dunes to climb, big cities to visit, pristine waters to sail, swim and explore, postcard-perfect sunsets to enjoy and fabulous fishing. Without a doubt, all of the Great Lakes are swim-able. In your case - Lake Michigan - may not be warm enough until August, but that all depends on where you will be. The city of Chicago has over 23 miles of beach on the Lake Michigan shoreline where residents and tourists go to beat the heat during the summer months. Obviously a city like Chicago will always have events going on to entertain but if you're relocating to Michigan you may want to investigate the many festivals that take place in communities right on the lake. You're quite likely to find many food and music festivals. Just visit the state of Michigan's tourism website. They list everything taking place throughout the entire state. If Michigan is your destination, you'll also be able to enjoy Lake Huron and Lake Superior. Michigan has the longest freshwater shoreline in the world and has more shoreline than any other state except Alaska. |
