What does Ghawazee mean?
I've been seeing this word
around and I know it has to do
with bellydance.
I looked it up, all I found
was Ghawazi which means
Egyptian dancing girls, of a
lower sort than the almeh. I
assume it's the plural form of
Ghawazee.
Does anyone have other
definitions of this word?
Also, what does it have to do
with modern bellydance? I've
seen it in context with
American Tribal Style.
Thanks!! :)

The Ghawazee women had their own style of belly dance, way back in the day. They were known for being entertainers by trade. They focused more on large, controlled hip movements with an isolated upper body. It's all about the hips for Ghawazee dancers. I recently did a Ghawazee routine with my dance troupe with zills. This is a tribal dance native to Egypt, American Tribal dancers took it and developed their own thing. So, just know that they are WAY different. I can't quite recall what region they are originally from, but if I'm not mistaken they are from Upper Egypt. This is a great example of what the Ghawazee danced like. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =mI0FEF9r3CQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =eEB4Cvtljqc&feature=related Also, Ghawazee is a dance move. It's a twisty hip movement, focused on bringing the hips back. Almost every style of bellydance includes it, although not all. The dancers in the links do it much of the time. This is a great page I found, explaining more of Egyptian dances. http://www.atlantabellydance.c om/Overview/EgyptianFolkloric. html That's all I can think of at the moment. I may come back if I remember anything else about them. |
