Treatment
If a ganglion cyst is symptomatic, it can be managed by aspiration or excision. Aspiration of the cyst is the simpler of the two procedures, but cysts recur in more than 50% of cases. With surgery, the recurrence rate is reduced to only 5 to 10% if the check valve at the joint capsule is removed.-Arthroscopy of the wrist is becoming available as an alternative to open excision of ganglion cysts. During arthroscopy, the origin of the cyst can be seen within the joint.
-An urban legend states that the traditional method of treating a ganglion cyst was to strike the lump with a large, heavy book, causing the cyst to rupture and drain into the surrounding tissues. Since even the poorest households often possessed a Bible (referring to the large family Bibles), this was commonly used, which led to the nicknaming of ganglion cysts as "Bible Bumps" or "Gideon's Disease." the surface, but i feet it
alot and it seems to be
getting bigger. I think it
might be a ganglion cyst. If
you know anything else could
you tell me what else it might
be.....and if it is a ganglion
cyst what i can do and if i
have to get it removed.

I've had several ganglion cysts. I went to the doctor about it, and she said that unless it was causing me pain, it wasn't a big deal and would probably go away on its own...which it did, months later. Then I got a second one, which was painful...felt kinda like carpal tunnel even though the cyst itself was on the joint of my middle finger. Wasn't able to get to the doctor at the time, though. Eventually the pain left and just the cyst remained, and I didn't worry about it. It was maybe a year before it went away. I don't know if it's a bad thing, though, that it's getting bigger. You might want to call your doctor and ask them. I know that they can inject corterzone (sp???) that will get rid of it, if it's a problem for you. |

Yes you do have to pay for the OR the Anesthesia and any other costs that come with it. There are a lot of nerves and vessels in your wrist so it is a fairly complex proceedure. My wife had one and we looked at having it removed and asked my dad a surgeon about it and he told us yes it was major and that back in the old days they would smash them with a bible breakign them up and let the body absorb them.....he was joking around about smashing it for free and we figured well we would have to wait until we could afford for my wife to have a few weeks off from work and it went away on its own so never needed surgery but yes it will be pricey and there is really no way around it. |
