Pan-Arabism is the union of the Arab peoples as one people. It was sparked by the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. After Gamal Abdel Nasser (1918-1970) led a revolt that overthrew King Faruk in 1952, he made Egypt a republic. He served as Egypt's prime minister from 1954 and became Egypt's president in 1956. He nationalized the Suez Canal in 1956. Before this Britain and France controlled it. This led to an international crises. By standing up to the West, Nasser became very popular with the other Arab countries. He became the main Arab leader in the Middle East and the main adversary to Israel. When Egypt an Syria formed the United Arab Republic in 1958, Nasser served as president. So he played a crucial role in pan-Arabism. Ironically before Nasser, Egypt did not consider itself an Arab nation. But he changed that. After he came to power Egypt considered itself the leader of the Arab World. I hope that this has been a help to you. |
