...The English word Folk ("people") is derived from a Germanic noun *fulka meaning "people" or "army" (i.e. a crowd as opposed to "a people" in a more abstract sense of clan or tribe). The English word folk has cognates in most of the other Germanic languages.Folk may be a Germanic root that is unique to the Germanic languages, although Latin vulgus, "the common people", has been suggested as a possible cognate.Calvert Watkins (ed.), The American Heritage Dictionary of Indo-European Roots, second edition (Houghton Mifflin, 2000) ISBN 0-618-08250-6 Read full entry

Folk????????????????
What are some good folk acts,
that I've never heard of, so
no Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan,
or Joan Baez?

i take it from your examples you're looking for some old originals? some great names mentioned already, here's a few more: shirley collins http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v= Hx-p1wc0fCM&feature=related martin carthy http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v= u2K7HcYld5s judy collins http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v= DejUPN4SksU&feature=related sandy denny http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v= 0Rd_gMrmf6g&feature=related and finally, a bit of self-indulgence, one of my earliest favourites the spinners http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v= c6v2jRqjHzg&feature=PlayList&p =28169F08BCD6D286&playnext=1&i ndex=25 |

What are some folk bands that I want to start a folk band
but most of my friends all
play guitar and nothing else.
I play guitar, piano, drums,
and I'm totally willing to
learn a new instrument if
needed.
I just need to know of some
other folk band that isn't
solely one guy playing the
acoustic guitar and singing. I
would love to hear some with
piano, cause it's my favorite.

You should totally form some kind of Bob Dylan-style mock-up band. That would be awesome. |

What canvas works best for What would make the best
canvas for a folk art piece
that will feature many
different materials? Included
in this creation will be
shingles, outdoor carpet, and
possibly other materials. I
assume the different
attachments will be applied
with glue so what would make
the best canvas? I have seen
plywood used as a canvas in
some folk art in a local
gallery, but that seems a bit
too primitive.

Well your prior answer was almost correct but not quite. You can use tough canvas tarps if you like the service and they take glue well, but stretch it over a piece of plywood for added support. Also don't get a 12 or 15 once one because they are too light. 17oz ones are great. here is a good source for you: http://www.wholesaletarp.net or http://www.tarps1.com |
