Questions/Answers
Why has Flemish not been givenan official status as alanguage in it's own right bythe Belgian government?
And should it, in your opinion? Flemish is a non-written language. The official language for the Flemish is 'Algemeen Nederlands', (general Dutch).
Because Flemish is not actually a stand alone langage. It is actually a Dialect of Dutch. The Belgian population is split evenly between French speaking Walloons and Dutch/Flemish speaking Flemmings, with a small German speaking minority also. It is notable that standard French is the other official language, and not the Wallonian dialect, so its the same for both communities. However, if the Flemmings want their dialect of Dutch to replace standard Dutch, then they shold be able to have it. I guess the reason it hasnt is that the Flemmings dont want it to.
Recognize West-Flemish as anofficial language or not ?
The official languages of Belgium are Dutch (standardized), French and German, as some may know. However, Dutch is a standardized language based on Brabantic dialects. The language we speak here, West-Flemish (French may know it as Vlemsch, spoken in Pas de Calais and Dutch as Zealandic), is regarded as a backwards language, a patois that is rude and ordinary. But, West-Flemish is a language on it's own, or is treated as such, because it is unintelligible (or something like that) for Dutch people and other Flemings outside of West-Flanders. It is basically Middle Dutch with Frisian, English, French, German and Celtic (?) traces. Should the government allow us to speak West-Flemish, our language, in public affairs or should we stick to the language of the oppressor, namely standardized dutch ? Frisian, closely related to our language, managed to get official in Holland, being, next to Dutch, the official language of Fryslan. Those interested in hearing west-flemish (dutch subs) : http://youtube.com/watch?v=-wX UCnY1E0o And something from the local hiphop group, in westflemish: http://youtube.com/watch?v=V18 OxJMCBCE
It's a purely political question: "A language is a dialect with an army and a navy" ("A shprakh iz a diyalekt mit an armey un a flot" , Max Weinreich).
Asking for recognition of ourlanguage?
Where I live, dutch is the official language, but West-Flemish is spoken over here more than dutch. In fact, dutch is being seen as haughty, however, the dutchification of our people has been progressing as to the generation after me not being able to speak WF as fluently as we can. In France (imagine that) West-Flemish is recognized as a minority language. In France, a country that's so hard at languages other than French, people are thinking of putting Bilingual street signs (Flemish / French) and are starting to learn WF again (the Flemish government in Belgium thinks this is wrong, because Dutch is more widely spoken, yet they have never spoken dutch over there). But over here, WF is being ridiculized, laughed at, mocked, subtitled... And not recognized at all. Should we also start to ask for recognition ?
I don't doubt you but another language spoken in the world today, English, threatens even Dutch and French. Don't overlook that.
