Has there ever been a Just wondering, Fleming made
bond an MI6 agent, of which
obviously there are loads in
the world. But what was his
inspiration for the evil
geniuses like Blofeld, Dr No,
Aurich Goldfinger and so on.
Has there ever been an evil
genius with elaborate plans to
blackmail governments of the
world that had to be stopped
by secret services?
Bin Laden is the closest I can
think of as a supervillian
with an elaborate scheme, but
obviously Fleming couldn't
have used him for inspiration.

Although none of Ian Flemings' villains are based on him, William Randolph Hearst was powerful enough to force the government of the United States to do his bidding by entering into a war with Spain. And no one was able to stop him, either. |

and Let Die".

That is a very good question! When I was younger, I loved the James Bond films with Sean Connery as Ian Fleming's soulless anti-hero. The movies got a little carried away with the stunts, but they followed the plots of Fleming novels. SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER When I went to see "The Spy Who Loved Me" all that changed. In fact, I walked out on "Spy..." because it was so far removed from the novel! In the book, a young (beautiful, of course) girl is running a motel in upstate New York for her crooked step-father, or uncle, or some such, and he sends thugs from the city to torch the motel for insurance, and they're supposed to kill the girl at the same time to lend authenticity to the fire. Bond just happens to be travelling down from Canada where he did a "job" on some criminal-type, and decides to stop at the motel... The damn movie starts out with space capsules, and submarines, and I don't know what! Where was the girl? well, there's always a girl, isn't there? The motel? Nope. The thugs? Some freak with steel teeth! I'd love to see EON do the original films that were so poorly done. I usually hate remakes and reboots and rehashing, but I sure would like to see faithful, or more faithful versions of "Spy Who Loved Me," and "Live and Let Die," and "Octopussy," and... |
