The stars in a constellation are named by their order of brightness. The brightest star gets the first letter of the greek alphabet, which is alpha. Next is beta. Eta is the seventh letter in the greek alphabet so eta Canis Majoris is the seventh brigthest star in the constellation Canis Major (the big dog). Eta Canis Minoris is the seventh brightest star in the constellation Canis Minor (the little dog). Before this astronomical system came about the brightest stars had already been named so many stars have several names. Eta Canis Majoris is also known as Aludra for instance. |
