In all honesty, different translations of the Bible can give the reader different meanings to key verses. It's become a recent trend in many Protestant (primarily Baptist) belief systems that a recently discovered version of the KJV of the Bible is the definitive version of the Bible. If that's the case, though, they've been misinterpreting their own Bible for centuries. |

Anyone familiar with English What is the difference between
a version and a translation?
Which is more accurate? I
think Living is very accurate
in thought, but sometimes not
literally as the language
responds to the cultural
differences of our time. I get
that. However, Living Bible
seems to capture the heart
without compromise. I like it
best of all. What do you say?

version/translation means pretty much the same....The NASB and the ESV are pretty much accepted as the two best...Living isn't a good translation...it is just paraphrased it loses a lot that way......NASB and ESV i would say are the two best the NASB is suppose to be the most word for word and the ESV is close to it but it flows better |

English Standard Version vs I'm on the ropes about which
translation to order i've had
an RSV bible for the longest
time and finally decided to
replace it since it's falling
apart (I take it everywhere
with me) but i can't decide
between these two
translations.

The NJB is my favorite, hands down - but here's some things for you to consider Note: more literal tends to be less accurate and less biased less literal tends to be more accurate and more biased http://www.bibleselector.com/l iteralness.html Note: a low reading level tends to be less precise http://www.bibleselector.com/r eading_level.html Note: conservative use of inclusive language is normally best http://www.bibleselector.com/i nclusive.html Passages: Gen 3:15 - should read "he or she" or "they" - not "he" Isa 7:14 - most scholars agree "virgin" is not best My (dated) review of the NJB http://www.jimpettis.com/bible s/njb.htm Bible Researcher reviews (this guy is biased toward conservative evangelical literal translations) http://www.bible-researcher.co m/new-jerusalem-bible.html http://www.bible-researcher.co m/esv.html books * one edition of ESV includes the English Protestant Apocrypha (EPA). All the rest of the ESV editions are 66-book bibles. * NJB includes entire Roman Catholic canon - 73 books, 3 less than the EPA http://www.bible-reviews.com/c harts_scriptures_d.html Perhaps if you told us exactly what you seek in a bible, we would be able to direct you without having to show all the differences Online http://www.catholic.org/bible/ http://www.esv.org/ Jim |
