endangered species?
how does protecting an
endangered species effect
natural selection?
|

You can take Homo sapiens, and whatever it does, as selection factors. Or you can define natural selection as the effect of any selective pressure other than those caused by H. sapiens. But however you define natural selection, the case is that H sapiens introduces a whole array of new factors into the scene. By protecting an endangered species (eg. panda breeding programmes) we alter natural gene flow inside and between populations, and change the survival rates and factors affecting survival... so we may maintain genes that would otherwise disappear from the population... and disable sexual selection, which, if done long enough, might have interesting effects on the creatures' mate preferences... that's how, I guess. I can say nothing more concrete, since we don't know how natural selection would act on the species if we didn't protect it (or it wasn't endangered) |

What is the difference between a. A threatened species and an
endangered species are the
same thing.
b. A threatened species means
that the population is likely
to become endangered. An
endangered species has
population numbers so low that
it is likely to become
extinct.
c. A threatened species is
already extinct. An endangered
species means that the
population's numbers have
increased greatly over the
last 5 years.
d. A threatened species means
that the population is likely
to become endangered. An
endangered species is already
extinct.

BUTANDING (Whale shark) - These friendly vegetarians known as the largest fishes in the whole world are hunted in the seas of Philippines. Although the law said it's illegal, many fishermen still hunt them for the big money they get for each kilo of butanding meat. DUGONG (Sea cows) - These cute and heavy sea mammals are too slow and too weak to defend themselves from illegal fishermen. It's disappointing that they are being hunted for their delicious meat. PAWIKAN (Philippine green turtle) - They are steamed, collected, and sold in black markets. These hard-shelled reptiles are fastly decreasing in number. Poor lads. PATING (Sharks) - They are hunted - not because they are fierce sea predators - but because of their fins. Yes. Fins. Why? Ask the sharks fin soup fanatics. LUMBA-LUMBA (Dolphins) - It's a shame that people do not realize that these highly intelligent sea mammals deserve to live not eaten. Many fishermen hunt them when they go near their boats to do acrobatics. Poor dolphins. All they wanted to do is to entertain humans. But these illegal fishers are too dumb to understand this. |
