...In the German Weimar Republic, an Enabling Act (Ermächtigungsgesetz in German) was a law passed by the Reichstag with a two-thirds majority, by which the government was authorized to legislate without the consent of the Reichstag. These special powers would remain in effect for the specified time. This is to be distinguished from the provisions of Article 48 of the Weimar Constitution, which allowed the President to legislate by decree in times of emergency, subject to the veto of the Reichstag. Hitler used the Reichstag fire to gain emergency powers. With these he managed to ban the communist party which had a large proportion of seats in parliament. This also made other parties wary of opposing the Nazis. The Nazi party convinced the Centre party and the Christian parties to agree to the enabling act whilst the SPD refused to vote and walked out on the act. Hitler used the chaos that was engulfing Germany (how much the Nazi's were responsible for this chaos is debatable) to make the enabling act appear attractive and wouldhelp restore order to the Wiemar Republic. However once this was signed it was the death of the Republic. Once the act was signed all the other major parties were either absorbed or dissolved. |

As we expected, Labor messed up the successful system put in place by the Howard government. The fact is those people are now allowed immediate access to Centrelink benefits making it very attractive to them. While I sympathize with genuine refugees many of these people have paid tens of thousands of dollars to avoid the waiting list for immigrants. They are selfish and deceitful in claiming refugee status & the Rudd government should hang it's head in shame for having pandered to these illegals. |
