...EFF has taken action in several ways. It provides or funds legal defense in court, defends individuals and new technologies from the chilling effects of what it considers baseless or misdirected legal threats, provides guidance to the government and courts, organizes political action and mass mailings, supports some new technologies which it believes preserve personal freedoms, maintains a database and web sites of related news and information, monitors and challenges potential legislation that it believes would infringe on personal liberties and fair use, and solicits a list of what it considers patent abuses with intentions to defeat those that it considers without merit. What happened to the Obama Administration Maintains
Bush Legal Argument for
Terrorist Surveillance Secrecy
President Obama's most liberal
supporters are dismayed and
disgusted ... because this
administration is invoking the
"state secrets" privilege.
President Obama's most liberal
supporters say they are
dismayed and disgusted because
this administration is
invoking the "state secrets"
privilege -- just as former
President George W. Bush did
-- to shield eavesdropping
programs from public exposure.
"I wasn't happy when George
Bush asserted that he could do
these things and I'm not happy
that President Obama is now
agreeing with George Bush,"
said Jane Hamsher of
Accountability Now.
"Other than being flat wrong,
the Obama administration's
position is seriously
disappointing to those
Americans who listened to
candidate Obama's promises of
a new era of government
accountability and
transparency, said Kevin
Bankston, senior attorney at
the Electronic Frontier
Foundation.
EFF sued the government
claiming that AT&T and perhaps
other telecommunications
companies cooperated with it
to allow access to people's
phone and Internet records --
a so-called dragnet in a
search for terrorist
communications.
Obama criticized the
cooperation during the
campaign, calling it an abuse
of authority and arguing that
the Bush administration
"undermined the Constitution."
Now, the Obama administration
is trying to have that same
lawsuit dismissed.
"For the Obama administration
now to try to have our lawsuit
dismissed based on the exact
same state secrecy arguments
is quite a turnaround and very
disappointing," Bankston said.

LOL Simple! No one who is given power will ever give it up, no matter the campaign promise. It seems to me that Obama runs on a very simple rule of debate and power. If he has "explicitly" committed to something, he will (try to) follow through, unless there exists a previous rule that allows or tells him not to. By "trying," this means he will appear to be doing his best. Remember how Hillary tried for health care? Well it wasn't Hillary's promise nor job to fix, it was Bill's job, yet we ignore that little detail. If he merely stated some ideal, don't expect much from him. He has to get in bed with rich folks, and they won't support him if doesn't play the game. In the end, he is a lawyer. Therefore, he will play with rules and draw things out until he infuriates many. In the end, WE will look stupid for electing him and he will blame certain targeted public figures for his mistakes as the scapegoats. The media will help him knowing they could be next on his agenda. Then, we can have a republican president take over, and the game for "change" starts all over again. YaY! |
