The Orthodox Church, also officially called the Orthodox Catholic Church, and commonly referred to in English-speaking countries as the Eastern Orthodox Church, is the world's second largest Christian communion, estimated to number 225 million members. Religious Bodies of the World with at Least 1 Million Adherents It is considered by its adherents to be the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church established by Jesus Christ and his Apostles almost 2,000 years ago. The Church is composed of several self-governing ecclesial bodies, each geographically and nationally distinct but theologically unified. Each self-governing (or autocephalous) body, often but not always encompassing a nation, is shepherded by a synod of bishops whose duty, among other things, is to preserve and teach the Apostolic and patristic traditions and related Church practices. As in the Roman Catholic Church, Oriental Orthodoxy and some other churches, Eastern Orthodox bishops trace their lineage back to the Apostles through the process of Apostolic Succession. The Eastern Orthodox church is the same church established by Christ. While it is similar to Roman Catholicism in many ways, the liturgy is very different, and they differ on several doctrines. The schism had its roots early in the middle ages as the two churches developed different styles of worship ( involving matters like the language of worship and the type of bread to be used in the Eucharist. In the west, many people added the words "And The Son" to the Nicene creed regarding the procession of the Holy Spirit. While the intent was to cement the divinity of Christ and combat Arianism, it essentially made the Holy Spirit inferior to the Father and the Son. In Orthodox triadology, any given trait most be common to all three persons of the Trinity or unique to one. By saying that the Father and Son had the procession of the Holy Spirit, those who supported the Filioque clause committed grave heresy. Later Pope Leo III added the clause to the creed. While the churches remained united for many years, eventually they fell apart, culminating with mutual excommunication of the pope and the Patriarch of Constantinople. Later, separate the churches drifted further apart doctrinally on issues like Clerical Celibacy, Papal Infallibility, Purgatory, Original Sin, and the Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Mary. I hope this helps. RE: Reason Vs. Faith. Orthodox do believe in the virgin birth as an essential doctrine. |

The main service, the Divine Liturgy, is on Sunday morning and lasts about two hours. Many churches have Great Vespers on Saturday evening which is about an hour, unless it is a Vigil (Vespers and Matins), which is an hour and a half to two hours. There can be services for various feasts on any day. Hours vary--check with the specific church before you go. church directory: http://orthodoxyinamerica.org/ (Sorry, there aren't any near Kanab.) Anyone can attend, but you have to be Orthodox to receive communion. Be sure to stand for the Gospel reading and the Lord's Prayer--you may end up standing for the entire service. I hope that I am answering your question correctly; I think you are asking what symbols do we use in order to show that we are Christians? Well most use the cross, not the crucifix but the cross but I'm seeing more and more fish. It's a symbol much like a fish shape with the name Jesus in the middle. Some do at least. I also see young Christians wearing t-shirts with "Jesus Freak" on it. But old school Christians we mainly wear a cross. Hope that answers your question! |
