...Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that occurs in a wide variety of animals, including both vertebrates and invertebrates. In the brain, this phenethylamine functions as a neurotransmitter, activating the five types of dopamine receptors — D1, D2, D3, D4, and D5, and their variants. Dopamine is produced in several areas of the brain, including the substantia nigra and the ventral tegmental area.http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1O87-ventraltegmentalarea.html Reference for VTA. Dopamine is also a neurohormone released by the hypothalamus. Its main function as a hormone is to inhibit the release of prolactin from the anterior lobe of the pituitary. Read full entry

I doubt it'll affect your sense of humour per-se as that's more complex than simply a chemical reaction, but as mentioned it probably will make you feel better and thus you'll more likely be able to react positively to humourous stuff. |

Will natural ways to increase I believe I have low dpoamine
levels. I am always tired,
bored, depressed, lack
motivation and have a low sex
drive. I want to try natural
ways to increase dopamine
levels such as eating fruits
and vegetables, taking
supplements and foods that
promote higher dopamine
levels. But do you think doing
these things will actually
make a difference, or will I
need prescription medication?

Chocolate, coffee, tea they all can do the job but not for too long, if you want something not natural, with few side-effects and no significant harm try Ritalin, i am taking it for more then 5 years now and i am totally normal..(ok maybe a little bit crazy but it has nothing to do with the Ritalin), as for the sex drive, well you can try a natural substance called PT141, this is a pheromone which can even the oldest nun into a horny sex animal... |

Dopamine is dopamine, but when given IV it cannot get into the brain. Levo-dopa is not used for blood pressure but parkinson's disease, it is an amino acid (not natural) that is carried into the brain and decarboxylated to give dopamine. The story on what dopamine does with regard to cardiovasular issues has changed (more likely due to marketing interests). In low doses it improves blood flow to the kidney and increases the force of contraction of the heart. At higher doses it appears to act like an alpha receptor agonist and increase blood pressure and decrease blood flow to the kidney. (going on memory, check a pharmacology text). see: http://www.merck.com/mmpe/sec0 6/ch067/ch067b.html#sec06-ch06 7-ch067b-459 also click on the dopamine monograph |
