Questions/Answers
what is the difference betweena vowel pair and a voweldigraph?
A vowel digraph is also called a glide. This is when a sound is made by starting with one vowel and ending with another. ie. o-ooh = owe... ah-y = aye/I/eye ... oh-er/ore. The word digraph consists of the prefix di=2 graph=symbols/letters therefore digraph means two vowels together forming one sound.
Are there any set rules forthe digraph "th" is thereanyway to be able to decode ifit has a hard or soft?
sound?
I teach Saxon Phonics so I'm not sure what you mean by hard or soft. We call it voiced or unvoiced. Voiced makes your vocal chords move, like in the words "than," "them," or "this." Unvoiced doesn't make your vocal chords move, like in the words "math," "moth," or "path." To quote from the exact lesson, "It's not always easy to tell whether the letters 'th' will make a voiced sound or an unvoiced sound, but usually, if the letters are in the middle of a word, they will make a voiced sound, and if they are at the end of a word, they will make an unvoiced wound. If the letters are in the beginning of a word, they can make either sound. However, you should try the voiced sound first because more words have the voiced sound. If the word doesn't sound right, try the unvoiced sound." Hope that helps. EDIT: In Saxon, to code digraphs, you underline them. If the digraph is voiced, put a line through the digraph. Leave it alone if it's unvoiced.

Holy cow I"m still lugging around that old dictionary. Answers.com spells it out. My keyboard doesn't (digraph) 1st) syllable Has 2dots over almost looks like a line, some fonts are spasmodic.
