What distance would it be to In my final calculations I am
trying find out the total
distance from Rotterdam to the
estuary of the Danube where it
enters the Black Sea. One day
I'd like to be able to travel
on a cruise through 10
countries, and just interested
to know more.
Thanks for the research. Rate
you're going you'll prollie
get the 10 points unless
someone gives a better answer.
Useful to know and I ever do
get the chance to travel on a
boat, you'd be welcome to join
me.

I did some research and found out that it's almost 2,000 miles from rotterdam, netherlands to sulina, romania a city where the Danube goes into the Black Sea. If you want to be more exact, it's 1,971 miles. This took me like 15 minutes of research, and I hope this helps you a lot! |

Were there really chains I am asking about the area
near Aggstein. I have heard
that medieval Lords put chains
across the Danube to stop boat
traffic and make them pay
tribute. I know this did
happen on the Hudson River
upstream from New York during
the Revolutionary War (not for
tribute, but for defense). But
did it really happen during
the Middle Ages? Is there any
evidence?
Thanks for your answer, Ines.
I am fluent in German, so no
problem with German-only info.

Have a look here: http://www.sagen.at/texte/sage n/oesterreich/niederoesterreic h/waldviertel/kuenring.html Stefan Fadinger (Bauernführer) tried to put a chain across the Danube near Aschach (Upper Austria) to block the Bavarian transports. Also have look here: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/T urmbefestigung_Linz scroll down to "Donauanschlüsse" So it was more or less common practice - either to collect tolls or for defense. |
