...The cystic duct is the short duct that joins the gall bladder to the common bile duct. It usually lies next to the cystic artery. It is of variable length. It contains a 'spiral valve', which does not provide much resistance to the flow of bile. Read full entry

1. Gallbladder disease (cholecystitis): gallbladder will be unable to release accumulated bile. 2. Bile release from the gallbladder will stop. Note that bile will still drip from the liver into the intestine via common bile duct if only cystic duct is blocked. 3. Lack of bile will interfere with emulsification of fats in fatty food, so it will be less efficiently digested. Color of feces will become lighter. Cholecystitis may in time lead to bacterial growth in blocked gallbladder (cholangitis) and inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis). If common bile duct becomes blocked, bile will not be able to flow into the intestine at all. The consequences will be the same, but more severe, plus jaundice and possibly life-threatening cholangitis (infection of the whole biliary tree). |

A dilated duct often indicates that a stone was present but has now passed. It would have given typical symptoms of stone and may have left behind residual inflammation, causing your symptoms to persist. |

bile would be blocked, since this duct allows it to move from the gallbladder during meal times to help digestion.. if it was absent, the food would'nt be digested properly (mainly the lipids, or fats), could cause an accumulation in your stomach, that could cause serious problems |
