Online Etymology Dictionary is a term that has different meanings. For example, in 1952, Alfred Kroeber and Clyde Kluckhohn compiled a list of 164 definitions of "culture" in Culture: A Critical Review of Concepts and Definitions.Kroeber, A. L. and C. Kluckhohn, 1952. Culture: A Critical Review of Concepts and Definitions. However, the word "culture" is most commonly used in three basic senses:
- Excellence of taste in the fine arts and humanities, also known as high culture
- An integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the capacity for symbolic thought and social learning

Culture?????????????
1. What is culture and why is
it important to understand
when studying history?
2. How are cultures and belief
systems around the world
similar and different?

Hotep, Culture as I understand it, is the acceptable norms and practices of a region. It is not attached to a person or race, but a region. This is important to understand when studying history. We cannot in all fairness judge the past, solely on our own culture. What is acceptable in one culture is not acceptable in another, or what was acceptable is not acceptable today; and perhaps wont be again tomorrow. Next, regardless of culture, time or beliefs, it is generally accepted that there are certain norms; not murdering, raping, stealing. However, every region has its own culture and often times different belief systems, so what is acceptable in one region is not necessarily acceptable in another; for instance, committing suicide in feudal Japan was honorable, the marriage of children was acceptable in Africa, Middle East and Far East, and women who could swim in America were considered witches and put to death. In closing, I hope this was helpful. However, I want extra points for doing your homework. Salaam, shalom, peace |

What happens to a people
In other words, how intrinsic
is the link between religion
and culture? I think religion
is one of the major indicators
of culture. Sure there are
other things that contribute
to culture like language,
system of economy, customs,
laws, diet, art, clothing,
geographic location, climate
etc, but I think religion is
probably the most recognizable
identifier of culture. Take
Americans for example; I you

How would you define culture How would you define culture
from an international
perspective?
Is national culture important
for companies going
international?
How can culture impact a
company?

Culture is a system about how and why man live and behave in relation to his environment. Yes. National Culture (if it is really existing) is important for international companies. Because it is necessary to know how the business should be managed taking into consideration the practices and standards of the place and its people. Culture affects a company by making the business strange and wierd whenever it does not conform with the existing culture of a particular place. Example: A fishing shop has a problem with the market of their fishing hooks, it was found out later that the place used straight hooks rather than the curved hooks. |
