...Cotton is a soft, staple fiber that grows in a form known as a boll around the seeds of the cotton plant, a shrub native to tropical and subtropical regions around the world, including the Americas, India and Africa. The fiber most often is spun into yarn or thread and used to make a soft, breathable textile, which is the most widely used natural-fiber cloth in clothing today. The English name derives from the Arabic (al) qutn قُطْن , which began to be used circa 1400.Metcalf, 1999, p. 123. Read full entry

Cotton........................ Why do people put cotton in
their horses ears. I used to
work for a trainer who put
cotton balls in her horses
ears when she was acting up.
Thanks in advance!
Is it considered cruel in
anyway?

To block out noise to calm down the horse. I don't think its cruel in moderation, similar to gentle and scarce use of a crop. Its just a way to block out distractions that may be stressing out the horse, and therefore, causing it to act up. Its similar to a human using headphones, in a way. |

Why are cotton balls or other For example, the bag will say
100 Jumbo sized cotton balls,
or 300 cotton balls, but a net
weight of cotton is never
listed. Why?
Almost every other product on
the market is sold by weight,
so I was wondering why cotton
is exempt from this rule. For
example, a bag of 100 Jumbo
sized cotton balls from one
manufacturer could weigh far
more, or less, than the same
product produced by another
manufacturer. Why is cotton
exempt from weight standards?

It would be too hard to be accurate with the weight. Besides, you use cotton by the ball, not by the pound, so you need to know how many balls are in a bag. Suppose you had a project that needed 150 balls of cotton, you'd need to know how many were in a bag in order to know how many bags to buy. |
