...The legislation created five Schedules (classifications), with varying qualifications for a substance to be included in each. Two federal agencies, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Food and Drug Administration, determine which substances are added or removed from the various schedules, though the statute passed by Congress created the initial listing. Classification decisions are required to be made on criteria including potential for abuse (which is undefined by the CSA [1]), currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States, and international treaties. What is wrong with the Schedule 1 drugs
Findings required:
(A) The drug or other
substance has high potential
for abuse.
(B) The drug or other
substance has no currently
accepted medical use in
treatment in the United
States.
(C) There is a lack of
accepted safety for use of the
drug or other substance under
medical supervision
Under this definition
shouldn't tobacco be included
as well?
Also how are drugs like
cocaine, methamphetamine, and
oxycodone schedule 2 drugs and
marijuana is schedule 1 if
they are clearly more
dangerous drugs than
marijuana?

I agree with your views on marijuana's incorrect scheduling, but because the three drugs you've listed all have accepted medical uses, they are schedule II substances: -Cocaine (though I don't believe is still used for this purpose) is an anesthetic. -Methamphetamine is an amphetamine used in the treatment of such conditions as narcolepsy and obesity (methamphetamine is prescribed in a pill-form, brand name Desoxyn) -Oxycodone, of course, is used for the treatment of pain. |
