...Construction aggregate, or simply "aggregate", is a broad category of coarse particulate material used in construction, including sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag, recycled concrete and geosynthetic aggregates. Aggregates are a component of composite materials such as concrete and asphalt concrete; the aggregate serves as reinforcement to add strength to the overall composite material. Due to the relatively high hydraulic conductivity value as compared to most soils, aggregates are widely used in drainage applications such as foundation and french drains, septic drain fields, retaining wall drains, and road side edge drains. Aggregates are also used as base material under foundations, roads, and railroads. To put it another way, aggregates are used as a stable foundation or road/rail base with predictable, uniform properties (e.g. to help prevent differential settling under the road or building), or as a low-cost extender that binds with more expensive cement or asphalt to form concrete. Why is aggregate so important Can someone please explain the
theory behind aggregate and
why it is so important in
construction?

Aggregates are very vital in every construction. Without aggregates, you don't have concrete. Concrete is a mixture of cement and coarse & fine aggregates with allowable water ratio. And in every construction, there is concrete mixture being used. For buildings, although structural steel are being used for columns and beams to replaced the reinforced concrete but what about the slabs, the slab on grades, the foundations, etc.? Still we need concrete to construct the said building components. Not only buildings need concrete but all structures regardless of types. Any project without concrete could not be completed. Therefore, if no aggregates, there will be no concrete. No concrete, no construction. That's the logic and theory behind aggregates. |

What are the Australian I've done a search through
Standards Australia and can't
find which Standard defines
trench construction, placement
of pipe and backfilling of
screenings/aggregates
specifically for road
construction.

How do I pour an exposed I have a new construction and
we are going to pour the
driveway soon. I'd like to
have a concrete driveway with
a broom finish, but on the
edges have a 1-2ft exposed
aggregate border. Does anyone
know how we can do this or how
to setup the forms? I'm
confused on how to setup the
pour. Ideally, we'd like to do
it all in one pour. Any help
would be much appreciated.

i would make sure the concrete has the right agrgate, then pour the whole thing then when it is almost set up then use plywood on the concrete then make the inside of a border, standing on the plywood pressure wash border or use a garden hose and a wire brush using the plywood as a guide |
