...Depending on the background of its rulers, it often had several different names at any given time; among the most common were Byzantium (Gr.:, Byzántion), New Rome (Gr.: Néa Rhōmē, ), Constantinople, and Stamboul. Constantinople?
I am studying for my midterm
in my western civilization
class. In order to study, im
essentially taking the test by
writing out who, what, when,
where, how and why the term is
importent to history in a
short paragraph like the test.
If you could please look over
what I have written and see if
there is anything i have
missed, just keep into account
that i have 20 of these that i
have to study for the test.
Thank you.
Contantinople was a city
founded by Roman Emperor
Constantine in the 6th century
CE. It was located at the
point in modern day Turkey
where Europe meets Asia,
modern Istanbul. It became the
capital of the Eastern Roman
Empire and the seat of the
Eastern Orthodox Church.
it says 6th century but my
handwritten version says 4th.
thanx for pointing that out.

Your date is wrong. Constantine moved his capitol to the old city of Byzantium in the 4th century of the common era. Otherwise you have the gist of it. |

the main business in Constantinople during the first years of the Ottoman rule (as during most of the Byzantine period) was government (army, admin and court), it fueled all the others (mostly construction, luxuries and of course the transport of food). There was also a number of shipyards in Galata. The main business partner of the Turks until at least 1630 were the Venetians. There also was an important traffic with Iran but it mostly transited through Aleppo and Izmir |

While the crusaders and Venetians were at Zara, on the west coast of what was later Jugoslavia, Alexis, the nephew of the deposed emperor Isaac Angelus approached them. Isaac had been deposed, imprisoned, and blinded by his enemies. Alexis proposed that if the crusaders came to Constantinople and overawed his enemies, then they could restore Isaac to the throne. In that case, Alexis promised that his uncle would pay a big sum out of the treasury and reunite the Greek Orthodox with the Roman Church under the authority of the Pope. The crusaders moved to Constantinople at besieged the city. The people restored Isaac as emperor, but there was not enough money in the treasury, and the people resisted unification of the Greek Orthodox with the Roman church. So the crusaders and Venetians attacked and took the city and shared out the territory of the Byzantine empire among themselves. |
