...The Compact Cassette, often referred to as audio cassette, cassette tape, cassette, or simply tape, is a magnetic tape sound recording format. Although originally designed for dictation, improvements in fidelity led the Compact Cassette to supplant reel-to-reel tape recording in most non-professional applications. Its uses ranged from portable audio to home recording to data storage for early microcomputers. Between the early 1970s and late 1990s, the cassette was one of the two most common formats for prerecorded music, first alongside the LP and later the Compact Disc. Cassette is a French word meaning "little box." Read full entry

Put simply, you will need to connect your cassette player to your PC soundcard, then play the cassette whilst recording on your PC. A step-by-step guide is available at: http://www.cassette2cd.co.uk/D IY/index.php (follow the link to ‘Cassette to CD‘) The recording software is the key, there are some free software downloads available at: http://www.cassette2cd.co.uk/d ownloads.php I have used ‘Magix Audio Cleaning Lab’ and ‘Audacity’ – Audacity is particularly popular since it is free! If you record to WAV format, expect file sizes of around 10MB per minute, or 1MB per minute for MP3 (at 128kbps). Once you have your digital versions of the recording on your PC, simply burn them on to a CD (Nero burning software or similar..). If you use Magix Audio Cleaning, the software will burn an audio CD for you without needing additional software (assuming you have a CD writing drive of course!) You will need the additional 'lame_enc.dll' file to export into MP3 - this can also be downloaded from the free software page. You can also download a free PDF version of the step-by–step guide from the download page mentioned above, the guide is complete with diagrams and screen-shots. Hope this helps (if you like the online guide, don't forget to 'DIGG' it....) Please note you cannot record directly onto CD with a PC, but hard-disk first, then convert to CD later. I would not recommend using a stand-alone CD-recorder as they struggle to record analogue signals that are more than about half an hour long... |

How do I fix playback on Brought some to spice up my
retro tastes, but one of them
eventually plays back funny
like slows down and stuff. I'm
sure this is an old problem
that occurs to everyone too.
Any solutions to repairing?

There are two possibilities: 1) the tape is stretched - in which case there is no remedy - sorry.. 2) the mechanism has become stiff - in which case you will need to FFWD and REW the tape up to about four or five times right through - this should improve it as long as the tape is not stretched. One other thing that can happen is that the tape can get turned - if there is a section of tape that sounds muffled and could be playing backwards - remove the cassette at the point and slowly wind the tape backwards with a pencil or something - you may find a twist in the tape which you may be able to correct by pulling it out and turning it round - you will need to find both places - the original 'twist' and where it reverts back to normal...and twist the tape back for that duration. If this is the case, it won't sound perfect when you twist it back as there will still be a kink in the tape. Hopefully it is option 2, and you will be able to sort it out... |

the easiest and cheapest way to do this is to purchase a cd recorder that you can hook up to your stereo. You can find them relatively cheap now. Shop for one at Bestbuy, CircuitCity or even Walmart. You can go online to their sets and compare prices. |
