Coccidiosis?
My two Chihuahuas have finally
found a vet with some common
sense! They both have
coccidiosis and are being
treated for it. I have a 2
year old dog, so we are trying
to clean/disinfect our house
so that he may not get it. Any
ideas or links would be great.
Thanks!

My pomeranian had coccidiosis as well in February. The main thing to do to keep it from reinfecting or spreading to your other dog is to pick up all stool everyday. Best to pick it up as soon as the dog does its business.Dispose in a plastic bag before putting into trash can. It is spread from contact from infected animals(not just dogs) stool that is in dirt. If your dogs have "messed" in the house wash area with bleach solution (not carpets or rugs of course) You may have to steam clean any of those areas. Wash all bedding of the dogs and wash play toys in hot sudsy water and rinse well. Any fuzzy type toys can be washed just like laundry and dried. Good luck and hope they both will be ok. Also remember to take in a second stool sample after meds are done with to make sure infection is gone. |

How long will my kittens have They are about 6 weeks old. I
got them six days ago and they
had diarrhea when I got them
and it increasingly got worse.
They were diagnosed with it
four days ago and had been on
Albon for four days now. If
anyone is familiar with
coccidia, please let me know
what to expect for their
recovery.

They should be on meds for about another three days maybe, correct? Be sure to give them all their meds and to keep them eating dry kitten food if possible so as not to add to the possibility of increasing the diarrhea. They should be showing signs of improvement already but if they aren't you should call the vet and let them know immediately. Normally, all of the ones I've seen show no signs of Coccidia within a week of being treated. Ten days max. |

Can I feed my chicks medicated One website says you
shouldn't, but the feed store
says you should go ahead.
Also, do chicks being fed a
commercial crumble starter
need to be given grit? Any
general chick info you have
would be wonderful. Thanks.

I've always heard that you should definitely not do that. It's one or the other. Which ever one you do, just keep their litter clean and their food and water clean and they will be fine. You do not need to give them grit while they are just eating the starter feed. Once you start giving them scratch grains, then you should keep a small container of grit available all the time. This is what helps them break down the whole grains. |
