...The meanings of the words "celibacy", "continence" and "chastity" in this context differ from the more or less synonymous meanings sometimes attributed to them in common speech. "Celibate" here means renouncing marriage. "Continent" means refraining from any form of sexual intercourse. "Chaste" means conforming to sexual morality. Thus a married man having sex with his wife is chaste, but not celibate or continent. And an unmarried man having sex with anyone is celibate, but is neither continent nor chaste. Read full entry

Is there a difference between My friend debates with me that
secular priests have a
different vow compared to that
of under groups, (ex: Jesuits,
SVD, Franciscan orders) Is
there really a different vow?

is the idea of clerical i mean come on, that's not
natural, we're humans we're
supposed to have sex and have
children.i'd think that's why
they touch boys (saying in
cases where they do not saying
they all do it) Im actually
confused about the idea, cause
doesn't the bible say spread
the seed, be fruitful or
something along those lines.

Yes, I'm absolutely certain that it is, however, I also think that some men might be attracted to the priesthood because of the 'access' it gives them to their prey. In other words, they care nothing for the church, nothing for other human beings but an awful lot about having their own needs met. No fixed address - you cannot possibly know that for a fact. All we know is what we read about, which is based on people coming forward with their stories of abuse and then (sometimes) we read of a few prosecutions. This has been swept under the carpet for decades. First it came to light in U.S. and now Ireland. This will now give more people the courage to come forward. We have not heard the last of this. |

Might clerical celibacy and Pope still pursuing celibacy
in defiance of priestly
scandals. Church of England
split over women priests etc,
despite women being the
strongest support of
congregations. But largely
celibate priesthoods avoiding
AIDS and therefor thriving in
Africa - so will they take
over the churches globally?
Obama may be a sign of things
to come? What fun.
