Is it illegal to impersonate a Especially in California?
For example...A man travels to
a church and claims to be a
deacon or some other member of
the clergy of that church, but
in reality he is neither (Lets
say, to be more specific, that
a man travels to Mormon
churches claiming to be an
elder, when he really is not).
He then uses his claims to
give actual sermons and
perform some of the duties of
the clergy.
Are there any legal
ramifications for such
actions, or is the guy just a
lier and there is nothing that
can be done about it?

I did some checking on this. First, I would not think it would take long for an "outsider" to give away his intention and that he was presenting material that did not agree with what the congregation expected to hear. So I do not think there would be many, if any, repeat performances. Second, it would be possible for a presentation or sermon to be stopped mid-stream if advisable. Third, to pursue in a legal fashion, may be counter-productive since the "attention" and making public his views may be the agenda in the first place. This would only allow this to take place on a wider scale than the original attempt. |

allowance and also deduct
those same expenses for his

Short version: You can't double dip. What gets written off as a parsonage allowance can't be written off again elsewhere. |

Can a church clergy serve as a I have some personal issues
and I want to talk to someone
about them. My church clergy
is a very nice, compassionate
person and my question is,
would it be appropriate to
talk to them about sexual
abuse? Would they be a good
kind of counselor/ "therapist"
for this? If anyone has
confided in a church clergy on
this issue, what was your
experience?

Yes. Talk to somebody about it. If you can't get a professional counselor, the clergymember should be able to put you in contact with one. |
