...Eusebius made use of many ecclesiastical monuments and documents, acts of the martyrs, letters, extracts from earlier Christian writings, lists of bishops, and similar sources, often quoting the originals at great length so that his work contains materials not elsewhere preserved. For example he wrote that Matthew composed the Gospel according to the Hebrews and his Church Catalogue suggests that it was the only Jewish gospel. It is therefore of historical value, though it pretends neither to completeness nor to the observance of due proportion in the treatment of the subject-matter. Nor does it present in a connected and systematic way the history of the early Christian Church. It is to no small extent a vindication of the Christian religion, though the author did not primarily intend it as such. Eusebius has been often accused of intentional falsification of the truth; in judging persons or facts he is not entirely unbiased. Catholic Encyclopedia, s.v. Why is the Pope never It seems unthinkable that if
the office of the Pope
actually existed, that he and
his office would be completely
overlooked in a 3 century
history.

The various early popes are mentioned in Eusebius, but they are not referred to as "Pope" but rather as the "Bishops of Rome". In the early church, there was still considerable debate over whether the Bishop of Rome was more important or had primacy over other bishops, especially those of the important sees of Alexandria and of Constantinople. Gradually, over the course of three centuries, the authority of the Bishop of Rome over the others came to be accepted by many Christians, although not all. It wasn't until Leo the Great in the 5th century that the Bishops of Rome actually made their authority official doctrine. A great part of the reason for the split between Eastern and Western churches lay in this very question. The first pope to actually call himself pope and not just Bishop of Rome was not Peter or any of the earliest popes, but rather Siricius (AD 384-99). Given that Eusebius died more than forty years before Siricius took the papacy, it would have been more surprising if he had referred to a pope. |

Try Google; Eusebius, church history. It may run you around a little but you'll probably find something that works. Keep in mind that Eusebius' book is a work of fiction, though, it has no objective basis and was written with a political and dogmatic agenda with no regard for fact. |
